The main attraction at Will Baker Park is the ½-mile hike up to Pulpit Rock. The trail begins at the base of the bluff, with a small parking lot right at the start. From there, signage makes it easy to follow the route to the overlook.
The climb includes stone steps, steep sections, and narrow dirt paths, making it a very easy hike - even in flip flops! As you ascend, you’ll pass through restored stonework that almost feels like castle ruins tucked into the bluff. Once at the top, the overlook offers sweeping views of the prairie and Upper Iowa River below—perfect for a family photo or a quiet moment to take in the landscape. It was beautiful. And felt very much like ruins of something very old.
Pulpit Rock is more than just a scenic lookout—it’s a piece of Decorah’s history. The park was named after Will Baker, a local resident whose contributions to conservation and recreation helped shape the outdoor spaces in the area. Over time, local stonemasons and volunteers created the stairways and rockwork that now give the trail its distinctive character.
For generations, Pulpit Rock has been a favorite gathering place for both locals and visitors. Early accounts note that families would picnic on the bluff, enjoying the same views you see today. The park is also part of Decorah’s broader tradition of preserving its unique bluffs, prairies, and waterways, ensuring that future generations can explore the same trails and overlooks.
Trail Length: ½-mile loop - short, but somewhat steep in sections. wear better shoes than I did!
Difficulty: Easy to moderate due to incline, stairs, and rocky patches.
Trail Surface: Narrow dirt paths, stone steps, and restored rock features.
Parking: Small lot located at the base of the bluff; signage points hikers to the trail.
Scenery: Overlook of Decorah, the Upper Iowa River Valley, and the prairie below. Stunning. Very much worth the stop.
