Yes, I was cutting across North Dakota and saw it. Cool.
The jet on display at the edge of Finley, North Dakota, is a vintage Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star trainer aircraft.
The Plane: The jet is a T-33A training aircraft built in 1953. The T-33 was a major jet trainer used during the Cold War.
The Location: It sits as a roadside war memorial at the entrance of Finley in Steele County.
It is paired with a POW/MIA flag to honor local veterans.
It turns out that Finley was home to the Finley Air Force Station, a Cold War radar base activated in 1951 and operated by the 785th Radar Squadron. The base monitored northern skies for potential Soviet aircraft and helped guide interceptor jets.
