A ring shaped stadium and an illuminated tower of words…
I got some cool footage of the giant loon in St. Paul today and while I was there I grab a few shots of Allianz Stadium and surrounding area.
Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, features a distinct ring-shaped roof and an overall oval, flowing facade designed by the architecture firm Populous. Its unique structure can be broken down into a few core shapes and design components:
The Facade: A sleek, 360-degree curving oval exterior that resembles a glowing spaceship. It is wrapped in a dynamic, translucent PTFE (laminated fiberglass) skin.
The Roof: A continuous ring-shaped canopy that encircles the pitch, extending inward to shield fans from rain and snow.
The Seating Bowl: A sunken, intimate bowl layout.
The Supporter Stand: The steep, single-tier south end (home to the "Wonderwall") is engineered at a rigid 34.9 percent incline for maximum sound resonance.
The stadium's aerodynamic, wave-like geometry was intentionally designed to mimic Minnesota's natural assets, such as the flow of its northern rivers and the shifting illumination of the Northern Lights
Near by and new is a tower of words…. A dramatic reminder of the connections of soccer to fans, communities and social values can now be seen opposite the northeast entrance to Allianz Field.
OMNIS, an original bronze sculpture by internationally-recognized artist Jim Sanborn, is a dynamic work of art that conveys themes drawn from the history of the sport going back over 2,500 years.
OMNIS is a 12-foot tall, 5-foot in diameter work in the form of a cylinder, with words cut out of the metal and represented in over forty languages. An internal light further highlights the words and writing at night, and also projects the written images onto surrounding structures. An associated plaque describes the work and explains the concept and messages that the artist – known for “making the invisible visible” – has embedded in this work. Cool!!
