John Wayne, known as "The Duke,"
At our home on Saturday mornings during my childhood, one could only watch cartoons for so long before dad took over the TV. Westerns. John Wayne. Every Saturday morning.
On a recent trip I saw a sign. I guessed (correctly) that my dad had already visited this site. My childhood deserved a visit as well.
Take a walk through the birthplace of Marion Robert Morrison. The four-room home has been restored to reflect its appearance in 1907. Born to Clyde and Mary Brown Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, Marion Robert Morrison went on to become John Wayne, star of movies such as "Angel and the Badman," "The Quiet Man," and "The Alamo."
Folks may tour the house, which is full of pictures and movie memorabila including the eye patch worn in the original "True Grit." A full museum and learning center are completed as well. Also on site is a veterans memorial and a huge John Wayne statue.
My favorite part of the visit: the small sign by the frypan for the movie set chuckwagon. “Leave it be, pilgrim.” Classic John Wayne. Classic Saturday morning.
